The Story Behind Zanana: What It's Like to Live Under Drone Surveillance

If you've never heard the word zanana, you've never lived under a drone.

In Gaza, zanana is the name people gave to the surveillance drones that circle overhead — sometimes for hours, sometimes for days. The word itself is onomatopoeic: it mimics the low, persistent hum of the drone's engine. A sound that becomes the soundtrack of daily life. A sound that means you are being watched.

When we designed the Zanana | Buzzer Drone collection, we wanted to do more than make a t-shirt. We wanted to capture what it feels like to live under that sound — the weight of it, the defiance that grows in response to it, and the dark humor that Gazans use to survive it.
