It's usually said about the future — how this will look in fifty years, what the textbooks will decide. But the phrase hides a question nobody asks out loud.
Who writes it
Not politicians, in the end. Not governments, and not the people who sat comfortably above the whole thing waiting to see which way it went.
History gets written by what ordinary people did while it was happening. Who watched. Who asked questions. Who said something at work, at dinner, in a group chat, when it would have been easier to say nothing.
That's a much smaller and much harder thing than a slogan. It's also the only part any of us actually controls.
The design
The phrase, plainly stated, with nothing decorative around it. No flag, no map, no fist. It's a sentence you either mean or you don't.
