Meet Teta Hayat Samdin, grandmother to Salam and Saeed. She's 74, she lives in Gaza, and her name means life.

She has baked bread every morning of her life. These days, her routine looks like this:

The wood comes from wherever it can: a broken chair leg, a piece of an old painted door. Basha the cat sits beside her the whole time, staring at the dough like it owes him something. And somehow Saeed always manages to steal the first piece.

She kneads the way her mother taught her, and her mother's mother before that. Some things they can't take.

The Samdin Family Collection
Teta Hayat is the second of six. Each mug follows one member of the Samdin family through a daily routine you'd recognise, lived the way Gaza lives it. Every family member is named for something they don't have: peace, happiness, hope, safety, life. Their family name, Samdin (صامدين), means steadfast.

Everything they're named for was taken. Except their name.

The design
The mug is hand-illustrated in soft colored pencil and wraps all the way around. It's woven with Palestinian details: Teta's tatreez-embroidered thobe, olive branches, za'atar, sage and mint tea..
